Notes From the Naturalist: Young Martins

Although we’re quickly approaching the last weeks of summer, there is a lot of new life around the Inn this time of year. Mother duck has two ducklings that are growing fast; the Osprey family we see from our deck also has two young ones; and the Martins, which nest in the two 14-unit birdhouses on our lawn, are in the process of fledging their brood. This picture is of a young Martin on its first day of flying. It’s not unusual to find the just-launched fledglings on the lawn as they take stock of what they just did and work out how to do it again. Purple Martins are one of my favorite flyers and within days the aviators are darting and swooping across the yard, snatching insects mid-flight.
